Dr. James Timmons

Dr. James Timmons is an exercise specialist with 12 years of strength and conditioning experience working with both high-performance athletes, and older adults. His passion for aging well was ignited as an aging athlete himself, and in how best to prolong his own sporting career to perform at the highest level for as long as possible. 

The foundations of YouAgeWell are built upon James’ academic endeavors, where he has received a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University College Dublin in 2012, an MSc in Strength and Conditioning from the University of Edinburgh in 2013, and Ph.D. from University College Dublin in 2018. He has also completed a recognised accreditation in Strength and Conditioning (CSCS).

James’ doctoral studies focussed on exercise training and dietary strategies to support improvements in body composition and physical function in older adults. This expertise combined with his background in sports and exercise science, has led to the optimisation of exercise training in an applied setting with the enhancement of quality of life and ageing well at its core.

Through his sporting career and general interest he has had a lifelong association with sport, exercise, health, and well-being. He has been actively engaged in elite sport and exercise all his life and has varied sporting experiences in Ireland, the USA, Australia, and Spain. His personal, academic, and research backgrounds mean that he is well-rounded as an educator in exercise physiology, strength and conditioning and exercise prescription, sports performance, and practical aspects of exercise and high performance.
